European Union Nature Information System (EUNIS) habitat classification: B3.111/B-LR.L.YG - Yellow and grey lichens on supralittoral rock (Davies & Moss, 1998).

James et al. (1977) recognized four maritime lichen phytosociological communities within the supralittoral:

  • Caloplacetum marinae association of lichens of the supralittoral 'orange' zone;
  • Ramalinetum scopularis association of lichens of the supralittoral 'grey' zone;
  • Sclerophytetum circumscriptae association of dry, shaded, siliceous rock recesses, and
  • Xanthorion parietinae communities of the supralittoral 'orange' zone.
