Key identification features
- A large burrowing shrimp, up to 10 cm long.

- Has a pair of large mantis-like claws, each with 5 curved barbs.
- The body is elongated and flattened from above with a small, shield-shaped shell behind the head.
Habitat
- From the lower shore to depths of 15 - 50 m.
- Lives in simple burrow systems in sand or gravel.
- Burrows are elongated and u-shaped with two openings, one larger than the other, usually up to one burrow per square metre of sea bed.
Species facts
- This species is usually regarded as a warm water species and its presence in British waters is thought to be related to an increase in sea temperatures.
- The 2 large, sharp, barbed claws are used for spearing and holding prey.
- There is one other species of mantis shrimp in British waters, (Platysquilla eusebia).
- It can be differentiated from Rissoides desmaresti as it has 12 to 15 barbs on its claws as opposed to 5.
