Latin name: Haliotis tuberculata
A type of sea snail (Mollusca)
Key Features
- A flattened, asymmetric, ear-shaped shell.
- Up to 9 cm long.
- Outer surface is mottled greenish-brown to red in colour.
- Inner surface lined with mother of pearl
- Series of small raised holes along the margin of the shell.
Where to look:
Lower shore, commonly found feeding on rocks covered in red encrusting algae.
Effects of warmer seas:
Will become more widespread mainly due to escapees from commercial mariculture farms.
Effects on the environment:
Grazing species keep areas clear of algae.
