Abundant in all suitably-sheltered rocky locations, in pools, in crevices, under overhangs, mid to low shore. Some very dense colonies under larger overhangs, pools sometimes crammed, touching each other or nearly. All specimens seen were red variety. Robert Durrant

Area of overhanging rock strata running at right-angles to the sea, with gullies open to NW, often sandy-bottomed. Lower part of wave-cut platform, with upper beach comprising large and very dynamic pebble ridge backed by high cliffs. Erosion of softer rock has created many shady crevices.		 Patchy distribution, but sometimes very abundant, esp upper mid-shore almost into the upper-shore pebble area. Robert Durrant
