Summary

Description

Similar to Pagurus bernhardus but smaller with a carapace length up to 14 mm long and muddy red in colour with paler spots. Adults often live in association with the cloak anemone, Adamsia palliata.

Recorded distribution in Britain and Ireland

All British and Irish coasts.

Found on sand, mud or gravel, lower shore and shallow sublittoral.

Identifying features

  • Carapace width exceeding medial length, surface with sparse groups of short setae.
  • Chelipeds unequal, upper surface of right chela regularly convex with a slight protruding part, and a slightly raised longitudinal region.
  • Blunt tubercles and small granules distributed evenly over both dorsal surface and sides.
  • Eyes moderately short, cornea expanded.
