Summary

Description

Tellimya ferruginosa is a delicate, flattened, oval bivalve that grows up to 8 mm long. The two shells, or valves, are the same shape and size, but the hinge, or beak, is nearer the posterior end of the oval shell making it assymetrical. The shells are whitish and usually encrusted with a thick reddish-brown deposit.

Recorded distribution in Britain and Ireland

Widespread around all British coasts.

Global distribution

Widely distributed from northern Norway to the Mediterranean and northwest Africa.

Habitat

Found in fine muddy sand, usually in the burrows of the sea potato, Echinocardium cordatum. The burrows are about 8 to 15 cm deep and occur from the intertidal to the subtidal, and offshore to about 200 m.
