The copyright of the MarLIN website rests with the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. Unless specified below, the website (or part thereof) may not be copied, reproduced, or duplicated without the permission of the Association.
"MarLIN: Marine Life Information Network" is a European Registered Trademark.
Use of MarLIN Information
MarLIN aims to make information on the marine biodiversity of the North East Atlantic freely available over the Web. Therefore, the information provided by the MarLIN website (except images and video, see below) is made publicly available. Nevertheless, the MBA still retains copyright.
Individuals and organizations may:
- use the information provided in your own private use or for use in the ordinary course of your business;
- use the information to support your own research (commercial or non-commercial);
- use the information in the preparation of educational materials for schools and the public;
Provided that:
- all uses comply with these terms and conditions;
- the source of the information, i.e. MarLIN, is fully attributed, and that
- MarLIN is informed of the use of the information.
Individuals and organizations may NOT:
- copy, duplicate or otherwise reproduce any or all of the content without the express permission of MarLIN and the MBA.
Content is deemed to include all written materials, illustrations (including maps), video, code and the MarLIN or MBA logo.
Attribution (or citation)
All users of the information or other content of the MarLIN website is asked to correctly attribute the source of the information. For example, our online species and habitat reviews may be cited as follows, indicating the researcher name, year of last update, title, citation date and that it is available on the MarLIN Website.

Use of Images
By contributing images (and/or video) to MarLIN, the owners of those images have agreed to their use on the MarLIN website, in MarLIN publications, posters and other promotional material in not-for-profit publications. Contributors retain the copyright of their images. MarLIN indicates the individual or organization that supplied each image and brief contact details on the website.
Images may be used:
- in personal, educational, non-for-profit papers and presentations on a single use basis, e.g. to illustrate schools reports, university student papers, posters and/or presentations.
Provided that: that users acknowledge the photographer, copyright holder and that it was published on the MarLIN website. For example

Images MUST NOT be used:
- for any commercial purpose, or
- for any purpose resulting in wide dissemination, e.g. in other websites (educational or otherwise), leaflets, promotional brochures or public displays (including educational displays).
If images are required for commercial purposes or for wide dissemination, the image provider MUST be contacted for permission directly (unless otherwise stated and not through the MarLIN team) and the form of acknowledgement obtained from the owner. Contact details for image providers are provided on the MarLIN website as part of our acknowledgement.

Use of data
Any data (e.g. survey data or records) presented via the MarLIN website are managed and hosted by DASSH [link to DASSH] and are subject to DASSH's terms and conditions.

The MarLIN team reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions without prior notice. It is the user's responsibility to ensure that they comply with our terms and conditions at the time of use and on each subsequent use.
