Privacy notice

The MarLIN project and website collect a limited amount of personal or technical data, which is detailed below.  The MarLIN project is hosted by the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (MBA) and is subject to the MBA’s privacy policy.

The MarLIN project and the MBA are committed to protecting the personal data of its users and contributors.  Any personal data will not be will not be published or passed on to third parties without prior consent, or where there is a legal obligation to do so.

Data collected

The following types of data are collected by the MarLIN project and website. Their use is explained below.

Image providers

The images used to illustrate the MarLIN website are donated by a number of image providers.  The image providers consent to the use of their contact details provided on the website.  These details are only used to allow users of the website to contact image providers about their images or their use.  These details can be amended or removed by the image provider, at any time, by contacting MarLIN (marlin@mba.ac.uk).

Data users

MarLIN asks users of our datasets to identify themselves before downloading the required dataset. This is purely voluntary.  This information is used to monitor the use of the datasets we provide. Users that identify themselves also consent to MarLIN contacting them about their project or the use of the dataset to advise on its use or to improve MarLIN products and services.  This information is held securely on our database and is not shared outside the MarLIN project. These details can be removed by the data user, at any time, by contacting MarLIN (marlin@mba.ac.uk).

Automated technical information

We automatically collect technical and usage data about equipment, browsing actions and patterns as users interact with the website. We collect this personal data by using cookies, server logs and other similar technologies.

Technical data includes internet protocol (IP) address, your login data, browser type and version, time zone setting and location, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform, and other technology on the devices you use to access our website. Usage data includes information about how you use our website.  This information is used to monitor the use of the website, web pages visited, browsing actions and downloads, in order to improve the website design, content, and services.

Cookies

The MarLIN website only uses one cookie (Google's Tagmanager .gtm system) to collect and analyze usage data (see above) using the Google Analytics platform.  This information is anonymous.  It is used to monitor the use of the website in order to improve the website design, content, and services. Users can manage the use of this cookie when they first visit our website and may change their preferences at any time using the button provided below.

Third-party links

Our website may include links to third-party websites, plug-ins, and applications. Clicking on those links or enabling those connections may allow third parties to collect or share data about you. We do not control these third-party websites and are not responsible for their privacy policies. When you leave our website, we encourage you to read the privacy policy of every website you visit.

Data controller

The MarLIN project and website are hosted by the MBA and are subject to the MBA’s privacy policy.

The MBA is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) with the Data Protection Registration Reference Z8249388.  The Data Protection Officer at the MBA is the controller and is responsible for your personal data.
