Summary

Description

Neobisium maritimum is approximately 3.2 mm long and is similar in appearance to a tiny tail-less scorpion. It has two-pairs of eyes positioned at the front of the cephalothorax.

Recorded distribution in Britain and Ireland

South and west coasts only. There are scattered records of the species in south west Cornwall, south west Wales, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, Anglesey and the coasts of Ireland.

Global distribution

In Europe, Neobisium maritimum has been recorded on the Atlantic coasts of Ireland, England and western France.

Neobisium maritimum is found in rock crevices and under stones from the top of the upper shore to the splash zone,

Identifying features

  • Cephalothorax with four eyes.
  • Galea a low or rounded tubercle.
  • Male genital armature consisting of a simple ring-like lateral apodema frame with no additional processes.
  • Lateral genital sacs weakly to moderately developed.
  • Female genitalia without spermathecal pockets.
